What
a great weekend of college football action. Week one did not disappoint and it
was so nice to sit on the couch all day long and actually watch every game
possible.
Here
is a recap of the top 25 games and our under the radar and must watch games.
Jeremy’s Week 1 Record 23-31 (.741)
Nick’s Week 1 Record 24-31(.774)
#1
Alabama 35 vs. Virginia Tech 10
The
Tide proved it is the No. 1 team in the country they dominated on defense
allowing just one big run to the Hokies and only 206 yards of total offense.
The thing that ‘Bama fans should be a little worried about is the lack of
offense it showed. It only was only able to gain 212 yards with most of its
scores coming on punt, kick returns or an interception returned for a touchdown.
Good thing for Alabama is they have next week off to prepare for a trip to
College Station to try and avenge its only loss last season.

#2
Ohio State 40 vs. Buffalo 20
The
Buckeyes racked up 23 points in the first quarter of this game and proceeded to
put it on cruise control after that. This game wasn’t really close at all. Heisman
candidate Braxton Miller racked up 255 yards of total offense and tossed two
touchdowns. He did not really look that impressive in this win, but he didn’t
need to.
Jeremy’s Pick- Ohio State
Nick’s Pick- Ohio State
#3
Oregon 66 vs. Nicholls
State 3
Successful
start to the Mark Helfrich era in Eugene, but did anyone expect anything else against
Nicholls State? The Ducks cruised past the Colonels racking up nearly 800 yards
of total offense and scoring 38 points in the first half. This game was not
even a contest. Marcus Mariota had 347 yards of total offense and three total
touchdowns as he was one of three Ducks to rush for 100 yards or more.
Deanthony Thomas (18-128-2) and Byron Marshall (8-124-1) also eclipsed the
100-yard mark.

#5 Georgia 35 @ #8 Clemson 38
This
game was must watch television and lived up to all the hype and the billing as
the best game of the weekend. I gave Clemson the slight edge in this game in
our Pick 6 preview only because of the atmosphere in Death Valley on Saturday
night and that looks like what made the difference in this three-point victory
for the Tigers. Tajh Boyd legitimized his Heisman candidacy in this game with 312
yards of total offense (18-of-30-270 yards passing, 14-42 rushing) and five
total touchdowns. He made all the big plays in the big situations to lead his
team to victory. The Tigers offense looked unstoppable at times and showed that
they are a national title contender. On the other side of the ball Aaron Murray
looked rattled at times, but running back Todd Gurley looked as good (if not
better) than any running back in the country. He put the Dawgs offense on his
back and nearly ran them to a win. Final thought, this game was an instant
classic. It showed Clemson is as good as its billing with a top-tier
quarterback and national title contender. Clemson has South Carolina State next
weekend, but the Dawgs have to get ready for another big showdown with South
Carolina coming in on Saturday.
Nick’s Pick- Clemson, 45-38
Jeremy’s
Pick- UGA, 41-38
#6
South Carolina 27 vs. North Carolina 10
Jeremy
was right on this game. The Gamecocks outlasted the Tar Heels. There was
nothing really that impressive about USC’s performance on Thursday night.
Jadaveon Clowney looked pretty average and yes I know it is the first game of
the season, but he was billed as being in the best shape of his life. I think
he took more plays off than he played in this game. That being said the
Gamecock defense looked pretty solid allowing a good Tar Heel offense just 293
yards of offense. South Carolina has a big one to get ready for now with a big
trip to Athens this week to take on Georgia.
Jeremy’s Pick- South Carolina, 31-17
Nick’s Pick- South Carolina, 38-10
#7
Texas A&M 52 vs. Rice 31
I
do not really know what to say about this game. Sure A&M looked pretty
good, but as you could see in the first half take Johnny Manziel away from the
Aggies and they are an average team at best. Problem is put Manziel out there
and he cannot keep his mouth shut and avoid a personal foul. I don’t want to
hear that he is a 20-year old kid any more and he makes mistakes. He knew what
he signed up for and when you win the Heisman the spotlight gets even brighter
and everything you do get scrutinized. But back to football, A&M rolled in
this game but gave up over 500 yards of total offense. It has a major date the
Alabama coming up in a couple weeks and if they allow 500 yards to the Tide it
is going to get its clock cleaned. Also if Manziel talks trash to Alabama like
he did to Rice (yes Rice) that will just fuel the Tide’s fire and make it
worse.
Nick’s Pick- Texas A&M
Jeremy’s Pick- Texas A&M
#9
Louisville 49 vs. Ohio 7
We
all knew Louisville was going to run over Ohio, but I did not think it would
put up 42 points in three quarters. Teddy Bridgewater lived up to his Heisman
hype with 355 yards and five touchdown tosses. Louisville is a solid team and
should be able to run through its week schedule for the next couple weeks. If
Bridgewater keeps playing like he did on Sunday he will be in New York for the
Heisman presentation in December.
Nick’s Pick- Louisville
Jeremy’s Pick- Louisville
#10 Florida 24 vs. Toledo 6
Jeremy
and I were both pretty close on Florida’s total score in this game, but the
Gator defense showed up and shut down a pretty solid Toledo offense. The Gator
offense was able to rack up 415 yards, but could not get the ball in the end
zone enough for all those yards. The
Gator defense showed that it is once again one of the best in the country
allowing only 205 yards of offense. The Gators have a big test this weekend
with a trip to Miami to take on a much-improved Miami team.
Jeremy’s Pick- Florida
Nick’s Pick- Florida
#11
Florida State @ Pitt, Monday, 8pm ET, ESPN
It
took Florida State and freshman quarterback Jamies Winston a couple drive to
get settled and once they did they rolled. Once FSU got on a roll, Pitt had no
chance at stopping the Noles. Winston started the game 17-of-18 in the first
half and ended the game 25-of-27 for 356 yards and 4 scores. The redshirt
freshman just went off and if he plays like that the rest of the season the
Noles could go a long way and Winston could be batteling for the Heisman. The
Panthers got on the board first but the Noles dominated the rest of the game. The
Noles defense only allowed 297 yards and turned Pitt over twice. FSU has the
week off before hosting Nevada on Sept. 14.

LSU 37 @ #20
TCU 27
Jeremy
and I both missed on this game. TCU’s two quarterback system seemed much more
of a detriment than I thought it would and give the LSU offense a lot of credit
it showed that it is a lot better than once thought. TCU has one of the best
defenses in the country and put up 37 points on it. I have never been a very
big Zach Mettenberger fan, but he showed a lot of maturity in this game leading
the Tigers offense to score after score in the second half. Mettenberger tossed
for 251 yards and one td but the combo of Terrence Magee and Alfred Blue ran
for over 180 ards and two score. LSU’s defense came into this game with a lot
of question marks and showed that it can handle a pretty solid rushing attack
from the Frogs. TCU’s offense look pathetic with the two quarterback system of
Casey Pachall and Trevone Boykin. Give the LSU defense a lot of credit. Both
teams has a pretty easy week next week, but both have some tough schedules down
the road. The Tigers look like a solid SEC contender. As for the Frogs they
need to find a quarterback, but I am sure Gary Patterson knows what he is doing
and this defense will shore up quickly.

Pick- TCU

#13
Oklahoma State 21 vs. Mississippi State 3
I
was very surprised that Oklahoma State did not put up more points in this game.
I know Mississippi State has a solid defense and likes to play keep away with
the running game. The Cowboys looked pretty mediocre in this game for a team that
is picked to win the Big 12 Championship. Good thing for the Cowboys it looks
like they found their quarterback in J.W. Walsh who took the majority of the
snaps. Walsh wasn’t exceptional going 18-of-27 for 135 yards and rushing for
125 yards and a score.
Nick’s Pick- Oklahoma State
Jeremy’s Pick- Oklahoma State
#14
Notre Dame 28 vs. Temple 6
The
Irish opened up a 14-point advantage early in this game and never let up. The
Notre Dame defense showed its might in this game it allowed 362 yards of
offense, but only gave up six points. It did look like the Irish found a
quality replacement at quarterback as Tommy Rees threw for 346 yards and three
touchdowns and led the offense to over 500 yards. The Irish have a bear of a
schedule, but if the defense can play well like it did in this game they should
be in everyone.
Jeremy’s Pick- Notre Dame

#15
Texas 56 vs. New
Mexico State 7
Texas
started slow in this game leading 14-7 at halftime, but scored 42 straight
points in the second half on their way to a 56-7 rout. David Ash looked like
the quarterback the Longhorns have been looking for since Colt McCoy left going
20-of-28 for 343 yards and rushing eight times for 91 yards and totaling five
touchdowns. Ash has some issues to address throwing two picks, but he looks
like he has won the starting job. Texas has a tough game against a tough
defense traveling to BYU on Saturday, but if it can keep putting up a lot of
points it should be able to keep racking up the wins.
Nick’s Pick- Texas
Jeremy’s Pick- Texas
#16
Oklahoma 34 vs.
UL-Monroe 0
It
seemed like this was everyone’s pick for an upset this weekend, but Oklahoma
squashed that quickly scoring 13 points in the second quarter. The Sooner
defense was the most impressive in this game allowing Kolton Browning and the
Monroe offense just 166 yards. After winning the quarterback job freshman
Trevor Knight played well rushing for 103 yards and throwing for 86 yards and
three touchdowns. If Knight can continue to grow and play well the sky is the
limit for the Sooners and in the wide-open Big 12 they have a chance to win the
whole thing.
Jeremy’s Pick- Oklahoma

#17
Michigan 59 vs.
Central Michigan 6
I
know Michigan played Central Michigan, but I thought the Wolverines looked
pretty good. I think the Devon Gardner era for Michigan will be much better
than the Denard Robinson era. Gardner and the Wolverine offense didn’t look
outstanding but was still able to rack up 463 yards of offense and score 59
points. I was not overly impressed with Gardner throwing two picks against
Central Michigan is not great, but he did go 10-15 for 162 and rush for 52
yards scoring three total touchdowns. The most impressive part for Michigan was
its defense allowing just six points and 210 yards. The Michigan offense better
improve quickly before taking on the might of the Notre Dame defense this
weekend.
Nick’s Pick- Michigan

Nebraska 37 vs.
Wyoming 34
This
game was a pleasant surprise as a Cowboy fan. I thought the Pokes showed a lot
of heart and guts coming back to have a chance to win at the end. The Huskers
have now won 28-consecutive season openers, but there was a time at the end of
this game that was in real jeopardy. The Huskers are going to have to figure
some things out on defense quickly before they meet UCLA in a couple weeks. The
Husker defense looked really bad against Wyoming allowing over 600 yards of
total offense as the Pokes and quarterback Brett Smith kept the Huskers of
balance on defense running a great spread offense. Smith went 29-of-43 for 383
yards and four touchdowns while also adding 92 yards on the ground. Smith
single handily kept Wyoming in the game. The one area Nebraska did look good
was on the ground. The Husker ground game had 375 yards and wore the UW
defensive front down. The Huskers should be worried about the play of Martinez,
he made a lot of mistakes that could have been avoided in the game. I think the
Huskers will be fine this season, but could struggle in B1G play. If Wyoming
plays like it did in this game it could win a lot of games in the Mountain West
this season.
Jeremy’s Pick- Nebraska
Nick’s Pick- Nebraska
#19 Boise State 6 @ Washington 38
Good
call on this one brosef. I defiantly underestimated the power of the new Husky
Stadium. The Huskies fed off that energy and rolled the Broncos. Husky
quarterback Keith Price and his offense rolled up nearly 600 yards of total
offense on the young Boise State defense. Price had a great game going 23-of-31
for 324 yards passing and two touchdowns. Husky running back Bishop Sankey also
had a great game rushing 25 times for 161 yards and two scores. The Huskies
looked like a team ready to contend in the Pac 12 and the Broncos are left
looking for answers as quarterback Joe Southwick went 25-of-40 for 152 and a
pick. Boise had 346 yards of total offense but could not punch the ball into
the end zone when it need to.
Jeremy’s Pick- Washington
Nick’s
Pick- Boise State
#21
UCLA 58 vs.
Nevada 20
Another
game I wiffed on that Jeremy got right. I really thought Nevada would contend
in this game but Brett Hudley and the UCLA offense ended that quickly running
up 647 yards of total offense. Hudley went 22-of-33 for 274 yards and two
touchdowns, while also adding 63 yards on the ground and two more scores. UCLA
back Jordon James rushed 21 times for 155 yards and a touchdown. Nevada’s only
bright spot was quarterback Cody Fajardo who tossed for 164 yards and ran for
another 106 and two yards. UCLA has the week off before making a trip to
Lincoln to take on Huskers.
Nick’s
Pick- Nevada
Jeremy’s Pick- UCLA
#22
Northwestern @ Cal
This game was a little closer than I was expecting it to be.
Northwestern was a little sluggish coming out of the gates, but it did a great
job of getting back on track to run by Cal. Running back Treyvon green had an
excellent game leading the Cats rushing for 129 yards on 16 carries and two
touchdowns. All-B1G running back Venric Mark was held mostly in check rushing
11 times for 29 yards. NU quarterback Trevor Siemian added 276 yards and one
touchdown through the air, but was picked off twice by the Bears. Offensively
Northwestern went over 500 yards, but allowed the Bear 548 yards. Cal quarterback Jared Goff had threw
the ball 63 times connecting 38 times for 445 yards and two touchdowns. Goff
connected with Chris Harper on 11 balls for 151 yards and two scores. Bryce
Treggs also added 145 on 13 receptions. The last quarter and a half
Northwestern was able to take control of this game scoring 17 points in the
final quarter to win. Northwestern has three winnable games, including Syracuse
this week, before a major date with Ohio State.
Jeremy’s Pick- Northwestern

Wisconsin vs. UMass, 12pm ET, Big 10
Network
Gary
Anderson’s debut for the Badgers was a good one as they blanked UMass 45-0. The
Badgers piled up 598 yards of total offense with 393 coming on the ground.
Three backs Melvin Gordon (13-144-1), James White (11-143-1) and Corey Clement
(16-10101) all eclipsed 100 yards on the ground. The Wisconsin defense held
UMass to 212 yards of total offense and turned it over twice. The Badgers their
second-straight home game this week hosting Tennessee Tech, in what should be
another win for Anderson.
Nick’s Pick- Wisconsin

#24
USC 30 @
Hawai’i 13
USC
took down Hawai’i with ease on Thursday night, but by no means was overly
dominant. The offense had 394 yards playing dual quarterbacks Cody Kessler and
Max Wittek who both failed to reach 100 yards passing. Both qbs were able to
find All-America receiver Marqies Lee as he caught eight passes for 109 yards. Hawai’i
only managed 231 yards on the USC defense and was turned over four times. USC
host Washington State on Saturday in both teams Pac-12 opener.

Oregon State vs. Eastern Washington
How
often do we see a FCS school defeat a FBS top 25 team? It seems like it’s
happening a little more lately and the bug hit Corvallis on Saturday as Eastern
Washington out ran Oregon State. The Eagles came out of the gate leading this
game and went toe-to-toe with the Beavers coming out on top after scoring with
just 18-seconds to go to take the lead. Eagles quarterback Vernon Adams had a
huge game tossing for 411 yards on 23 completions and four touchdowns. EWU
racked up 625 yards of total offense, while the Badgers had 527 yards. This was
supposed to be a really strong Oregon State defense, but Eastern Washington it
up. Tough start for Mike Reilly and the Beavers, but a visit from Hawai’i
should get them back on track, maybe…
