Jeremy’s Week 2 picks, 18-24 (.750)-Season 41-55 (.745)
IDLE, Next game- 9/14 @ Texas A&M
Oregon rolled in this game putting up 31 points in the second half. Quarterback Marcus Mariota compiled 321 yards of total offense and three scores. Mariota is looking like the quarterback everyone was expecting to be this season. De’Anthony Thomas added 124 yards and three scores as the Duck offense gained 557 yard of offense. Oregon looks like a solid top-five team but has played two pretty easy games against Nicholls State and Virginia. I will say, first-year head coach, Mark Helfrich and assistant coach Scott Frost have done a great job keeping this offense on a insanely fast pace. Oregon gets a visit from an improving Tennessee team this week. It will be interesting to see how the Ducks respond to a faster more opportunistic defense.
Jeremy’s Quick pick- Oregon, 52-24
Nick’s Quick pick-Oregon, 60-14
We all knew this game was going to be a snoozer, except for the fact that Braxton Miller left the game in the first quarter will an MCL sprain. Reports say day-to-day at this point in time and it looks like the Buckeyes avoided a major loss. Senior quarterback Kenny Guiton replaced Miller and led the Bucks to a 42-7 blowout. Guiton tossed for 152 yards and ran for 83 more with a touchdown. The Buckeye offense racked up 445 yards of offense with 263 of that coming on the ground. The defense held the Aztecs to 280 yards of offense and forced four turnovers. Ohio State takes a trip to Cal this week and should run over the Bears, with or without Miller.
Nick’s Quick pick- Ohio State, 42-17
Jeremy’s Quick pick- Ohio State, 41-13
Clemson ran over FCS South Carolina State 52-13 in a game which Tiger quarterback Tajh Boyd had the wind knocked out of him and played very little. Good thing for the Tigers as junior quarterback Cole Stoudt came in and was a nearly-perfect 19-of-20 for 143 yards and three touchdowns. Stoudt and the Tiger offense had 512 total yards with 28 first downs. The defense allowed just 241 yards and only 155 through the air. Clemson has a short week before traveling to NC State on Thursday.
Nick’s quick pick- Clemson, 45-10
Jeremy’s quick pick- Clemson, 45-13
Last season this game was decided by a field goal. Stanford put that down early slowing the San Jose State offense down to a crawl downing the Spartans 34-13. The Cardinal allowed the Spartans 35 yards on the ground and 251 total yards. The Stanford front seven dominated the line of scrimmage in this game and put David Fales on his back a lot with four sacks. Cardinal quarterback Kevin Hogan tossed for 207 yards and two scores, while running back Tyler Gaffney added 104 yards and two scores on the ground. Stanford takes a trip to West Point this week and should dominate the Black Knights just like SJSU
Jeremy’s Pick- Stanford, 34-10
Nick’s Pick- Stanford, 31-17
Wow! Georgia has played in back-to-back instant classic games. This game was tied at 24 at half time, before the Dawgs came out and score 10 unanswered in the third quarter and 17 in the second half to win 41-30. Georgia signal caller Aaron Murray showed up big in this game earning National Player of the Week honors connecting on 17-of-23 (.739) throws for 309 yards and four touchdowns. Running back Todd Gurley also rushed 30 times for 134 yards with two total touchdowns. The Dawgs still have some issues to address on defense allowing 454 yards of total offense and 226 on the ground. Either way huge, huge win for a Georgia team that now has the week off before welcoming North Texas on Sept. 21. South Carolina goes right back to the SEC schedule with a visit from a solid Vanderbilt team on Saturday.
Nick’s Quick pick-Georgia, 35-31
Jeremy’s Quick pick-South Carolina, 34-31
Nick’s Quick pick- Texas A&M, 51-24
Jeremy’s Quick pick- Texas A&M, 48-17
The Cardinals and quarterback Teddy Bridgewater rolled over Eastern Kentucky 44-7. Bridgewater went 23-32 for 397 yards and four touchdowns. The Cardinals offense dominated with 475 yards with 397 of that coming from Bridgewater. The Louisville defense also looked tough allowing just 206 yards all game, but it was against an FCS opponent. I will give Bridgewater props he is playing as well as any quarterback in the country no matter the opponent. Louisville heads to Lexington on Saturday for an in-state matchup against Kentucky.
Jeremy’s Quick pick- Louisville, 41-14
Nick’s Quick pick- Louisville, 48-7
LSU went off against UAB with Zach Mettenberger leading the Tiger offense with 282 yards on 16-of-19 through the air with five touchdowns. The young LSU defense looks to be improving week-to-week and the offense looks like it can beat some people. LSU has another snoozer this week against Kent State and should be getting ready for Auburn next week before a trip to Athens in two weeks.
Nick’s Quick pick-LSU, 34-3
Jeremy’s Quick pick- LSU, 35-9
IDLE, Next game- 9/14 vs. Nevada
Give the Hurricanes a lot of credit in this game, they came out and played well to take down Florida. But, my one take from this is the Florida offense is so bad. The Gator offense gained 413 total yards, but could not find the end zone until its final possession. Jeff Driskel looked really bad all day and the Mimai defense kept him so far out of sorts. The Gator defense had a solid day and did what it had to do to keep Florida in this game. Miami just made big plays down the stretch of this game to hang on to win. The Miami offense was aided by some big turnover by the defense and was able to punch the ball in on a short field. The Gators have this week off before welcoming Tennessee on Sept. 21. Miami also has the week off and will host Savannah State on Sept. 21.
Jeremy’s Quick pick- Florida, 27-24
Nick’s Quick pick- Florida, 28-24
The Cowboys seem to have found their quarterback in J.W. Walsh. Walsh threw for 326 yards and four scores, completed his first 10 passes and ended the day 24-of-27. The Pokes opened a big lead early and ran away with this game. The Cowboys host Lamar on Saturday in what should be another game with 50-plus points.
Nick’s Quick pick- Oklahoma State, 48-10
Jeremy’s Quick pick- Oklahoma State, 34-6
This game was must watch television and went back and forth. Michigan had this game nearly locked at 34-20 before Stephon Tuitt intercepted a pass from Devin Gardner in the end zone pulling the Irish within a touchdown. The Irish followed it with a field goal pulling within four at 34-30. Michigan converted some big plays down the stretch and Gardner completed his fourth touchdown pass to lead the Wolverines to a 41-30 victory. Gardner finished the game 21-of-33 for 294 yards with 82 yards on the ground and one more score. Irish quarterback Tommy Rees had a pretty good game going 29-of-51 for 314 yards two scores and two picks. Michigan is surging and looks like it is a potential BCS contender with an easy game next week against Akron. Notre Dame takes a trip to Purdue on Saturday and should be able to handle the Boilermakers with solid defense.
Jeremy’s Quick pick- Notre Dame, 31-30
Nick’s Quick pick- Notre Dame, 21-17
We all knew the Texas defense had some problems, but 550 yards on the ground against a bad BYU offense is pathetic. The heads fell quickly in Austin as Manny Diaz was fired on Sunday and Greg Robinson was brought in to replace him. The Longhorns were dominated all game by the Cougars and this game was never even in question. Cougar quarterback rushed for 259 yards and three touchdowns. The Longhorns have some serious issues to address on defense, most notably tackling. We will see how they can handle newly ranked Ole Miss coming in on Saturday.
Nick’s Quick pick- Texas 31-14
Jeremy’s Quick pick- Texas, 35-17
Oklahoma’s offense didn’t look great in this game and the loss of Trevor Knight could prove to be problematic. Good thing is Blake Bell is a pretty good quarterback. Oklahoma only scored one touchdown and kicked three field goals in this game on its way to a 16-7 victory. The Sooners are going to have to score more than 16 points next week as it host a strong offensive team in Tulsa.
Jeremy’s Quick pick- Oklahoma, 37-17
Nick’s Quick pick- Oklahoma, 41-28
IDLE, Next @ No. 22 Nebraska
I picked this game a little bit closer and I was underestimating the Wildcat offense as it ran over the Orange defense in a 48-27 win. The NU offense looked really athletic and talented in this game. Quarterback Trevor Siemian went 15-19 for 259 yards and three scores and his back up Kain Colter went 15-of-18 for 116 yards and a score. The two combined for 30-of-37 for 375 yards and four touchdowns. Colter also rushed for 87 yards and another touchdown. The standout for the Wildcat offense was Tony Jones with nine catches for 185 yards and a score. The Wildcat defense turned the Orange over four times leading holding them to seven points in the first half. This game was over at half and the Wildcats rolled. Northwestern has two tune-up games against Western Michigan and Maine before welcoming Ohio State on Oct. 5.
Nick’s Quick pick- Northwestern 31-21
Jeremy’s Quick pick- Northwestern, 41-24
IDLE, Next game- 9/14 @ Illinois
Wisconsin ran over Tennessee Tech with over 606 yards of total offense and 387 yards rushing. Badgers Corey Clement (13-149-2), Melvin Gordon (9-140-1) and James White (22-109-1) all rushed for over 100 yards in the Badgers drubbing of Tennessee Tech. The Wisconsin defense has yet to allow a point this season but has a tougher test taking a trip to Tempe to take on Arizona State this weekend.
Nick’s Quick pick- Wisconsin, 42-3
Jeremy’s Quick pick- Wisconsin, 41-13
The Huskers looked a lot more dominant this game than they did last week. The Nebraska defense returned two interceptions for scores, while racking up four total. Taylor Martinez and the NU offense rolled up 479 yards of total offense in a 56-13 rout. Husker running back Ameer Abdullah rushed for 114 yards and two touchdowns. Nebraska’s defense still allowed 222 yards through the air, but looked a lot better than last week. The Huskers have a tough test this weekend with UCLA coming to town.
Jeremy’s Quick pick- Nebraska, 42-24
Nick’s Quick pick- Nebraska, 48-31
Baylor had 781 yards to total offense. Yes I said 781 yards. This offense is really hot right now with 452 yards passing and 329 on the ground. Quarterback had 338 yards through the air while tossing for two touchdowns. Lache Seastrunk also had a great game carrying the ball 17 times for 150 yards and three touchdowns. The Baylor defense game up nearly 400 yards of offense but only allowed 13 points. I will be interested to see what happens when Baylor plays a team that can score with it. The Bears have two weeks off before hosting West Virginia on Oct. 5.
Nick’s Quick pick- Baylor, 52-21
Jeremy’s Quick pick- Baylor, 48-17
TCU got off to a slow start in this game, but eventually go on a roll and ran over Southeastern Louisiana. Problem for TCU is quarterback Casey Pachall broke his non-throwing arm and is out at least eight weeks. The TCU offense is going to have to pick it up to be able to make a run in the Big 12. The defense also did not look great in this game, but I am sure it will come together and shore things up. The Frogs have a short week before traveling to Lubbock for a Thursday night game against surging Texas Tech.
Jeremy’s Quick pick- TCU, 34-10
Nick’s Quick pick- TCU, 28-7
Oh the woes in LA after this one. Washington State won this game without even scoring an offensive touchdown. The Trojans had 54 yards (yes, 54) through the air and failed to reach 200 yards of total offense. Lane Kiffin is trying a two quarterback system and that is not working at all for the Trojans. This team has looked really bad so far this season and I don’t see it improving anytime soon. USC welcomes Boston College this week in a game that could be tough for the Trojans.
Nick’s Quick pick- USC, 38-34
Jeremy’s Quick pick- USC, 34-31
Boston College played a great game on Thursday night. This
team is surging and makes a trip to struggling USC this week.
Nick’s
pick- Boston College, 35-17Jeremy’s pick- Boston College, 24-23
I just about picked Western Kentucky this game but after watching it turn the ball over five times in six plays the rout was on. Tennessee looks like a quality team in two weeks.
Nick’s pick- Tennessee, 38-31
Jeremy’s pick- Tennessee, 31-30
Bowling Green- 41, Kent State- 22
Bowling Green is looking like an early MAC leader with two
quality wins including dominating last year’s MAC runner up Kent State.Jeremy’s pick- Bowling Green, 31-21
Nick’s pick- Bowling Green, 38-24
Wyoming’s offense looked dominant in this game scoring 42 consecutive points. Brett Smith threw for 295 yards and four scores and running back Shaun Wick rushed 15 times for 110 yards. The Wyoming defense for two turnovers and sacked the Vandals seven times.
Nick’s pick- Wyoming, 42-28
Jeremy’s pick- Wyoming, 42-27
Utah State- 52, Air Force- 20
Wow. We both whiffed on this game. Chuckie Keeton and Utah
State just ran over Air Force in Colorado Springs. Twenty-one unanswered points
in the third quarter put this way out of reach for the Falcons. Jeremy’s pick- Air Force, 31-30
Nick’s pick- Air Force 31-30
Nick 19-24
