Week 5 Wrap Up

Week 5 Wrap Up

There were 15 games to pick from this past weekend.  Seven 25 teams were IDLE, we missed Stanford-Washington and there were two top 25 match ups (WVU-Baylor and OSU-MSU).  We made our picks, now it’s time to see how we did. Thanks to everyone for looking this week. Check back later tonight or tomorrow morning for our top-25 polls. Feel free to send us some questions or comments on how you think we did. We will be happy to answer back.

#1 Alabama vs. Ole Miss
Final- 33-14, Alabama
*Our picks-Jeremy- Roll Tide, 41-10. Nick ‘Bama rolls, 42-14
Alabama did not look as impressive as I thought they might in this game, but I do have to say Ole Miss is playing a lot better football as of late. That is no excuse for the Tide, but a 19 point victory against a quick Ole Miss team is nothing to shake at. Expect 'Bama to continue to roll this week.

#2 Oregon @ Washington State
Final- 51-26, Oregon
*Our picks- Nick- 65-24, Ducks.  Jeremy- 45-24, Ducks.
We were pretty close on this one.  We know that Mike Leach's offense would score some points but the Ducks do what the Ducks have done all season.  A close game at the half, with Oregon steam rolling through the second half with 300 rushing yards and out scoring the 'Cougs 28-7 for an easy 51-26 win.

#3 LSU vs. Towson
Final- 38-22, LSU
*Our picks- Jeremy- 41-3, LSU.  Nick 52-13, LSU.
I thought that LSU would roll in this game and actually looked pretty bad. I do not think this team is the No. 3 team in the country. They have a great defense and are a good team but I'm not sure about them being top five. I admit that I said last week let the hype begin for their big showdown with Alabama on Nov. 3, but they are going to have to get past a pesky Florida team next week first.

#4 Florida State @ South Florida
Final- 30-17, FSU
*Our picks- Nick- 40-24, FSU.  Jeremy- 44-14, FSU
This game was much closer than the score would indicate.  Credit the Bulls, after two tough losses, for coming out swinging against the 'Noles.  FSU was never really able to get in rhythm and was forced to piece together an ugly win.  Miscues in the red zone by FSU kept the Bulls in it until a Christian Jones fumble recovery for a touchdown at the end of the 3rd quarter put this one out of reach for B.J. Dainels and the Bulls.

#5 Georgia vs. Tennessee
Final- 51-44, Georgia
*Our picks- Jeremy- 34-31, UGA.  Nick- 31-14, UGA.
The one thing I learned from this game is that Georgia can score some points. Also Tennessee is a better offense than I thought. Bray is a pretty good quarterback, but he made some pretty horrible decisions down the stretch of this game that lost it for the 'Vols.

 #6 South Carolina @ Kentucky
Final- 38-17, South Carolina
*Our picks- Nick- 38-17, S. Car.  Jeremy- 38-13, S. Car.
Nick predicted this one a lot better than I did.  Were both close on the final score, but this game was closer than the score indicated.  I expected the Gamecocks to come out and drill a Kentucky team that looked completely inept last week.  Instead, South Carolina came out flat and went into halftime down 17-7.  Credit Steve Spurrier for making adjustments at the break as the Gamecocks out scored Kentucky 31-0 in the second half.

Even though I did not write the recap on this one I have to talk a little trash saying, how about picking that score exactly correct!? Also Kentucky did hang with them for the first part of this game but South Carolina was just too strong. At times this team looks legit but others like in the first half wow pretty bad.

#7 Kansas State IDLE
*Next game- vs. Kansas, Oct. 6

*#8 Stanford @ Washington, L 17-13
This game was very interesting to me. I thought that the Stanford front seven was one of the best in the country after making Matt Barkley look like a pretty unimpressive Heisman quarterback. Washington did exactly what it needed to do it ran the ball to open up the pass. Let’s be honest 136 on the ground isn’t stellar, but against this physical front seven it did what it needed opening up the pass. The catch and run that scored the game-winning touchdown for Washington was a big-time play. What a great win for Washington. Sarkisian has this team on the rebound and it is just too bad that Seattle fans were still hung over from the Monday Night Football debacle to sell Century Link Field out. Come on people, its Thursday night prime time on ESPN against a top-10 team.

#9 West Virginia vs. #25 Baylor
Final- 70-63, WVU
*Our picks- Nick- 56-45, WVU.  Jeremy- 51-31, WVU
Jeremy and I were talking today and we seemed to agree for all the amazing offense in this game there was just as much pathetic defense. Not to take away from what Geno Smith did, lets just remember that this is a Baylor defense that was gashed by Washington in its bowl game last season. Give if up to West Virgina for making this Baylor defense look totally over matched.

#10 Notre Dame IDLE
*Next game- vs. Miami, Oct. 6 in Chicago

#11 Florida IDLE
*Next game- vs LSU, Oct. 6

#12 Texas @ Oklahoma State
Final- 41-36, Texas
*Our picks- Jeremy- 37-31, Texas.  Nick- 37-24, Texas
Barn burner.  With a weekend full of excitement and high flying offenses, this game might have been the most exciting.  Texas and OK St. went blow for blow for the entire game with the Longhorns getting a late, controversial touchdown by Joe Bergeron with 29 seconds to seal the deal.  What was thought to be a tough Longhorns defense was blasted for 576 total yards and will have to make some serious adjustments to keep West Virginia under 70 next week.

#13 USC IDLE
*Next game @ Utah, Thurs. Oct. 4-

#14 Ohio State @ #20 Michigan State
Final- 17-16, OSU
*Our picks- Jeremy 21-20, MSU.  Nick- 24-17, MSU.
This game was not suprising really, except for the fact that Bell did not get anything going on the ground. Ohio State did exactly what they need to do and take him out of the game as he finished with only 45 yards on 17 carries. Michigan State is so one dimensional on offense that when he does not get rolling it does not have a prayer. Give the Sparty defense credit forcing three turnovers and keeping them in the game. Miller proved however that he is one of the best players in the B1G helping his team to a gutty performance. He accounted for 315 of the Buckeyes 383 yards so it shows if anyone can slow him down this team is in trouble.

#15 TCU @ SMU
Final- 24-16, TCU
*Our picks- Nick- 42-21, TCU.  Jeremy- 35-10, TCU
TCU couldn't get out of its own way in this rain-soaked game, accounting for 27 yards and 3 points in the second half.  Gary Patterson's Horned Frog defense came up big, intercepting SMU's Garrett Gilbert five times to avenge last seasons 40-33 overtime loss.  Though 4-0, TCU will have to get things figured out offensively as their schedule gets much tougher from here on out.

#16 Oklahoma IDLE
Next game- @ Texas Tech, Oct. 6

#17 Clemson @ Boston College
Final- 45-31, Clemson
*Our picks- Jeremy- 45-24, Clemson.  Nick- 37-20, Clemson.
Clemson showed just how much fire power it has on offense in this game. Tajh Boyd proved that he does not need Sammy Watkins to make this offense humm, with DeAndre Hopkins catching balls. This game played pretty much like we called it though. Boston College was able to get its passing game going and kept this close. Clemson must have been swetting a little with the game 24-21 at half, but back-to-back scores to start the second half really set the tone and put them on cruise control at that point. 45-31 is a lot closer than I picked, but BC had 369 and three touchdowns through the air and kept it close.

#18 Oregon State @ Arizona
Final- 38-35
*Our picks- Nick- 35-28, Arizona.  Jeremy- 27-24, OSU.
Booyah, brosef!  I'm going to gloat a little as this pick gave me the 1 game nod over Nick in picks this week.  After a 17-0 deficit to start the game, Arizona came storming back scoring 21 unanswered setting up a back and forth second half.  The Beavers took a late lead on a Sean Mannion TD pass to Conner Hamlett for the go ahead score with 1:09 to play.  The Beaver defense intercepted Matt Scott on the final drive to seal the deal for Mike Riley and OSU.

#19 Louisville @ Southern Miss
Final- 21-17, Louisville
*Our picks- Jeremy- 33-17, Louisville.  Nick- 37-10, Louisville.
This game really suprised me. Southern Miss is not a good team and Louisville made it look a lot better than it is. Looking at Louisville over the last few weeks I have been less than impressed. This was another rain soaked game, but that is no excuse for the 'Cards. They had to shutout Southern Miss in the second half to win this game and they only scored nine points themselves. Quarterback Teddy Bridgewater looked bad and they only reason they came out with a victory is because Senorise Perry went off for 118 yards and two touches. 5-0 is nothing to sneeze at for Louisville, but watchout they are not going to escape many more games like they did this one.

#20 Michigan State @ #14 Ohio State

#21 Mississippi State IDLE
Next game- @ Kentucky, Oct. 6

#22 Nebraska vs. Wisconsin
Final- 30-27, Nebraska
*Our picks- Nick-24-21, Nebraska.  Jeremy- 24-20, Nebraska.
Another great game from this past weekend that I'm sure kept my Husker friends on the edge of their seats.  The Huskers were down 20-10 at halftime but a 17 point third quarter would give them the boost they needed to take control against a Wisconsin team that seemed to finally come to life a little this week.  An efficient game by Taylor Martinez and 259 rushing yards gave the Huskers a big conference win and might just be enough to win the B1G by default... some one's got to.

#23 Rutgers IDLE
Next game- vs UCONN, Oct. 6

#24 Boise State @ New Mexico
Final- 32-29, Boise State
*Our picks- Jeremy- 31-13, Boise State.  Nick- 45-7, Boise State.
About all I can say is wow in this one. Boise State opens up a 25-0 halftime lead and then allows New Mexico to reel off 14 straight in the third quarter to pull it within 11. The Broncos answered early in the fourth quarter, but then allowed the Lobos to reel off another two touchdowns and pull the game within three. Boise hung on for the victory, but they were outscored 29-7 in the second half. This is not the Boise State team of old and I would not be shocked if they lose a few games when they get into the Mountain West schedule.

#25 Baylor vs. #9 West Virginia

Final tally...

Jeremy- 14-1

Nick- 13-2
