Week 13 Headlines and Rewinds

The SEC’s week off- Bama, Florida, Georgia, S. Carolina, Auburn and Mississippi State all had the week off although one coach wouldn't agree.  Anyway, we must wait one more week to see how this conference, and the playoff picture will play out.

 

Arkansas Razorback dominating another SEC West foe- The Razorbacks shutout their second straight SEC West foe, burying the 8^th ranked Ole Miss Rebels, a week after doing the same to then ranked, LSU.  There’s potential for Arkansas to not finish at the bottom of the SEC West and with Missouri coming up, they will have a say in who wins the East.

 

Samaje Perine breaks the single-game rushingrecord… that was broken the week before by Melvin Gordon- Perine led the Sooners past Kansas on Saturday and into the freshly reprinted record books with 427 rushing yards.  Perine tacked on five touchdowns for good measure and oh by the way, he also led the Sooners in receiving with one catch for 19 yards. 

 

UCLA taking control of Los Angeles- UCLA has been pretty… mmeh, all season.  They’ve looked pretty good at times and looked pretty crappy at times but on Saturday against USC, the Bruins were at their best.  Brett Hundley threw for 326 yards and accounted for four of UCLA’s five touchdowns.  The defense was also in control, holding a potent Trojan offense to only 276 yards and forced two turnovers. 

 

Ohio State takes one step closer to the final four- The Buckeyes notched another win Saturday and could continue to move up the rankings.  Helping the Buckeyes was 25^th ranked Minnesota taking down Nebraska, helping OSU’s strength of schedule. 

 

Florida State… you know what, it’s really not anything different than we’ve seen from the ‘Noles all season.  Never mind.

 

Missouri’s opportunity to turn college football on its head- Let’s take a look at this.  Missouri was ranked No. 20 in the College Football Playoff poll going into Saturday’s game at Tennessee and the win puts them a game away from making their second straight SEC Championship game.  I realize it’s a long shot but should they go on to beat Arkansas next week and then win the SEC, they’ll have to get a serious look by the playoff committee.  If they do win out, they could keep the SEC from getting a representative in the inaugural College Football Playoff.

 

Virginia Tech-Wake Forest “sets offensive football back 100 years”- Dave Clawson.  All you have to do is look at the box score.  This game had a whopping 488 total yards of offense.  That’s only 42 more yards than Samaje Perine accounted for, on his own.  Neither team scored in regulation and were a combined eight for 35 on third down attempts.  The win is Wake’s first over VaTech in 31 years and puts the Hokies 21-game bowl streak in real jeopardy. 

 

 

 

Players of the Week

 

Samaje Perine, RB, Oklahoma
Perine put the Sooners on his back and bulldozed the KU defense for an NCAA single-game record for 427 yards and five touchdowns on 34 carries (12.6 yards per carry). 

 

Brett Hundley, QB, UCLA
The Bruins needed Hundley to play one of his best games against their cross-town rival.  Hundley delivered, completing 22 of 31 for 326 yards and three touchdowns.  The win keeps UCLA alive in the South and gives the Bruins their third straight win over the Trojans.

 

Arkansas Defense
How about back-to-back shutouts over ranked SEC West foes.  Shutting out a struggling LSU offense was impressive but shutting out the 8^th ranked Rebels was on a different level.  The Razorback defense held Ole Miss, averaging over 6 yards per play going in, to 4.5 yards per play and forced six turnovers. 

 

Tevin Coleman, RB, Indiana
Despite being the only weapon on Indiana’s offense, Coleman kept the Hoosiers alive against the Buckeyes with 228 yards and three touchdowns.  Saturday was his fourth game of 200+ yards.

 

 

Top 25 Picks Review

No. 1 Alabama 48, W. Carolina 14

The Tide got a runaway win over Western Carolina on Saturday but it comes at a bit of a cost.  Star receiver, Amari Cooper was injured in the game along with about six other Alabama players.  None of the injuries look serious but it’s a risk you take in a game like this.

The Ducks were in control from the opening whistle, with a 30-3 first half run.  Mariota led the charge with four touchdowns as Oregon moves one step closer.

The final score looks much more impressive than the game really looked for the Buckeyes.  Early turnovers and sloppy play allowed the Hoosiers to hang around until late in the fourth quarter.

Baylor jumped out to an early lead and paced its way through an easy win over a reeling Oklahoma State team.

North Carolina 45, Duke 20

The Tar Heels could do no wrong on Thursday night against the Blue Devils.  UNC rolled up 592 yards of offense while jumping out to a 28-7 first half lead.  This game should have been even more of a blowout, but three UNC turnovers on drives where the Tar Heels were going in to score allowed Duke to make it look more reasonable than it was.  The win gets UNC bowl eligible and knocks Duke out of the ACC Coastal running.

This is what happens when you make a homer pick.  Boise State is making a push to win the conference and at 9-2 makes an appearance in the AP Poll.

I liked Virginia here and Miami showed up just like I thought they would- flat and uninspired.  The Hurricanes fall to 6-5 and 3-4 in the ACC.  Virginia improves to 5-6 and next week’s game against Virginia Tech will determine which team makes a bowl.
