Movers and Shakers
Not much change in the top 10 after week 13.  Ole Miss is the biggest loser of the week, in more ways than one as their remote playoff hopes were dashed in a 30-0 butt-whipping.  As a result, UCLA, Georgia and Michigan State all move up a spot.

The biggest winners in the polls this week is Ohio State and Arizona.  The Buckeyes get another win and lock up the Big Ten East and Minnesota’s win over Nebraska further improves Ohio State’s strength of schedule.  Of all the teams on the playoff bubble, Ohio State might be in the best position.  The Wildcats get a big boost after crushing Utah in Utah over the weekend.  They jump from No. 15 last week to No. 11 this week and with ASU on deck, they’ve got a chance to get another quality win.  Arizona needs UCLA to lose to get into the Pac-12 Championship but should they win out (win the Pac-12), they would have to be a serious contender.

Playoff Picture
Let’s roll up our sleeves and take a look at the contenders.

No.’s 1-3 Alabama, Oregon, Florida State- Win and you’re in.

No. 4 Mississippi State- The Bulldogs are currently sitting at No. 4 and if the playoff started today, they’d be in.  Unfortunately, the loss to Alabama is going to work against them.  I don’t see the committee letting in a team that doesn’t win its conference in year one.  Baylor and/or TCU are nipping at their heels and Ohio State and UCLA as possible conference champions are all in better positions in my opinion.

No. 5 TCU- TCU has one fatal flaw- Baylor.  If Baylor losses it hurts TCU’s strength of schedule and if Baylor wins, they should get the nod over TCU.  The Horned Frogs have a chance at a solid win on the road at Texas but their best opponents are well behind them and Baylor has more high-profile games to finish the season.  The Horned Frogs will probably need losses by Mississippi State, Oregon and probably Ohio State to get in.

No. 6 Ohio State- I think Ohio State as a Big Ten would get the nod over Mississippi State and would jump TCU.  They probably need a Baylor loss (which would also help them jump TCU) and if Bama, Oregon or FSU lose, OSU’s in.

No. 7 Baylor- I like the position the Bears are in, despite sitting at No. 7.  If the Bears beat Texas Tech and Kansas State in the next two weeks, they’ll jump TCU.  K-State should still be sitting around No. 12 when they face Baylor and that would be a huge win on the final weekend of the season.  With two more impressive wins to finish the season, I think Baylor has a better resume than Ohio State and would get in over Mississippi State.

No. 8 UCLA- The Bruins are all of a sudden a pretty legit contender.  They’ve played their best football of the season the last two weeks and a win over Stanford this weekend puts them in the Pac-12 Championship and a rematch with Oregon.  If UCLA can beat Stanford and knock off Oregon, they would have to be in serious consideration.  They would need one of the other top four to lose and probably TCU or Baylor as well, but they have good wins and you could make a case for a two-loss Pac-12 winner.

No. 9 Georgia- Georgia needs some serious help, starting with a Missouri loss, which would give the Bulldogs the nod in the SEC East.  If Georgia wins the SEC, the whole playoff picture is going to get very interesting, especially if Miss State is 11-1.  That said, I think the SEC winner is in, regardless of record.

No. 10 Michigan State- Out.

No. 11 Arizona- The Wildcats are moving in the right direction but they would need losses by UCLA, Baylor/TCU and probably Alabama and Mississippi State as well.

No. 13 Arizona State- They need to beat Arizona, UCLA to lose, beat Oregon and have losses from pretty much everyone else ahead of them.
No. 17 Missouri- The Tigers have a long way to go but, if they beat a surging Arkansas team and win the SEC, they will have a pretty strong case.  In reality, Missouri has more control over their fate than Georgia and Mississippi State and as an SEC Champ might be able to force out OSU, TCU or Baylor, even with two losses.  Thirteen spots is a lot of ground to make up but would the committee really leave out the SEC Champ?

Week 13 Headlines and Rewinds

Headlines

The SEC’s week off- Bama, Florida, Georgia, S. Carolina, Auburn and Mississippi State all had the week off although one coach wouldn't agree.  Anyway, we must wait one more week to see how this conference, and the playoff picture will play out.

Arkansas Razorback dominating another SEC West foe- The Razorbacks shutout their second straight SEC West foe, burying the 8th ranked Ole Miss Rebels, a week after doing the same to then ranked, LSU.  There’s potential for Arkansas to not finish at the bottom of the SEC West and with Missouri coming up, they will have a say in who wins the East.

Samaje Perine breaks the single-game rushingrecord… that was broken the week before by Melvin Gordon- Perine led the Sooners past Kansas on Saturday and into the freshly reprinted record books with 427 rushing yards.  Perine tacked on five touchdowns for good measure and oh by the way, he also led the Sooners in receiving with one catch for 19 yards.

UCLA taking control of Los Angeles- UCLA has been pretty… mmeh, all season.  They’ve looked pretty good at times and looked pretty crappy at times but on Saturday against USC, the Bruins were at their best.  Brett Hundley threw for 326 yards and accounted for four of UCLA’s five touchdowns.  The defense was also in control, holding a potent Trojan offense to only 276 yards and forced two turnovers.

Ohio State takes one step closer to the final four- The Buckeyes notched another win Saturday and could continue to move up the rankings.  Helping the Buckeyes was 25th ranked Minnesota taking down Nebraska, helping OSU’s strength of schedule.

Florida State… you know what, it’s really not anything different than we’ve seen from the ‘Noles all season.  Never mind.

Missouri’s opportunity to turn college football on its head- Let’s take a look at this.  Missouri was ranked No. 20 in the College Football Playoff poll going into Saturday’s game at Tennessee and the win puts them a game away from making their second straight SEC Championship game.  I realize it’s a long shot but should they go on to beat Arkansas next week and then win the SEC, they’ll have to get a serious look by the playoff committee.  If they do win out, they could keep the SEC from getting a representative in the inaugural College Football Playoff.

Virginia Tech-Wake Forest “sets offensive football back 100 years”- Dave Clawson.  All you have to do is look at the box score.  This game had a whopping 488 total yards of offense.  That’s only 42 more yards than Samaje Perine accounted for, on his own.  Neither team scored in regulation and were a combined eight for 35 on third down attempts.  The win is Wake’s first over VaTech in 31 years and puts the Hokies 21-game bowl streak in real jeopardy.

Players of the Week

Samaje Perine, RB, Oklahoma
Perine put the Sooners on his back and bulldozed the KU defense for an NCAA single-game record for 427 yards and five touchdowns on 34 carries (12.6 yards per carry).

Brett Hundley, QB, UCLA
The Bruins needed Hundley to play one of his best games against their cross-town rival.  Hundley delivered, completing 22 of 31 for 326 yards and three touchdowns.  The win keeps UCLA alive in the South and gives the Bruins their third straight win over the Trojans.

Arkansas Defense
How about back-to-back shutouts over ranked SEC West foes.  Shutting out a struggling LSU offense was impressive but shutting out the 8th ranked Rebels was on a different level.  The Razorback defense held Ole Miss, averaging over 6 yards per play going in, to 4.5 yards per play and forced six turnovers.

Tevin Coleman, RB, Indiana
Despite being the only weapon on Indiana’s offense, Coleman kept the Hoosiers alive against the Buckeyes with 228 yards and three touchdowns.  Saturday was his fourth game of 200+ yards.

Top 25 Picks Review

No. 1 Alabama 48, W. Carolina 14
The Tide got a runaway win over Western Carolina on Saturday but it comes at a bit of a cost.  Star receiver, Amari Cooper was injured in the game along with about six other Alabama players.  None of the injuries look serious but it’s a risk you take in a game like this.

No. 2 Oregon 44, Colorado 10
Line: Oregon -32.5, O/U: 72.5

No. 4 Mississippi State 51, Vanderbilt 0
Line: MSU -30.5, O/U: 53
Good on MSU for actually playing an SEC opponent… even though Vandy’s probably worse than any of the FCS foes the other big boys played.

No. 5 TCU, IDLE
Next game- Thursday, Nov. 27th @ Texas

No. 6 Ohio State 42, Indiana 27
Line: OSU -34.5, O/U: 65.5
The final score looks much more impressive than the game really looked for the Buckeyes.  Early turnovers and sloppy play allowed the Hoosiers to hang around until late in the fourth quarter.

Jeremy- Ohio State 47, Indiana 23
Nick- Ohio State 52, Indiana 35

No. 7 Baylor 49, Oklahoma State 28

Line: WVU -2.5, O/U: 58
The Wildcats were able to hold off a competitive West Virginia in Morgantown on Thursday night, despite only totaling one rushing yard.  Jake Waters was solid through the air, with a season high, 400-passing yards.

No. 13 Arizona State 52, Washington State 31
Line: ASU -16, O/U: 70.5

No. 20 Missouri 29, Tennessee 21
Line: TENN -3, O/U: 48
The Tigers take a big step in getting back to the SEC Championship with their win at Tennessee.  The defense was dominant, holding the Vols to 279 yards and forced two turnovers.

No. 21 Oklahoma 44, Kansas 7

Move over Melvin Gordon, Samaje Perine breaks Gordons week old, single game rushing record going for 427 yards and five touchdowns in the Sooners rout of the Jayhawks.

Jeremy- Oklahoma 34, Kansas 24

No. 22 Clemson 28, Georgia State 0

Nick- Clemson 34, Georgia State 3

No. 24 Louisville 31, Notre Dame 28
Line: ND -3.5, O/U: 53
Special team’s struggles and a shoddy defense doom the Irish yet again.  The Irish are losers of four of their last five.

Nick- Louisville 27, Notre Dame 21
Jeremy- Notre Dame 24, Louisville 21

No. 25 Minnesota 28, No. 23 Nebraska 24
Line: Neb -10.5, O/U: 56.5
I expected at least 70 rushing attempts, this game had 91.  Minnesota overcame a 21-7 deficit despite the loss of running back David Cobb in the third quarter.

Jeremy- Nebraska 33, Minnesota 28
Nick-Minnesota 27, Nebraska 24

Best of the Rest

North Carolina 45, Duke 20
Line: DUKE -5.5, O/U: 65
The Tar Heels could do no wrong on Thursday night against the Blue Devils.  UNC rolled up 592 yards of offense while jumping out to a 28-7 first half lead.  This game should have been even more of a blowout, but three UNC turnovers on drives where the Tar Heels were going in to score allowed Duke to make it look more reasonable than it was.  The win gets UNC bowl eligible and knocks Duke out of the ACC Coastal running.

Boise State 63, Wyoming 14
Line: BSU -12, O/U: 56
This is what happens when you make a homer pick.  Boise State is making a push to win the conference and at 9-2 makes an appearance in the AP Poll.

Nick- Boise State 34, Wyoming 17
Jeremy- Boise State 30, Wyoming 23

Northwestern 38, Purdue 14
Line: O/U: 50.5
Northwestern keeps its bowl hopes alive with a nice win on the road at Purdue.

Jeremy- Northwestern 23, Purdue 20
Nick-Northwestern 30, Purdue 24

Maryland 23, Michigan 16
Line: Mich -5, O/U: 42
More struggles out of Ann Arbor as Michigan’s bowl hopes are all but snuffed out.  Maryland improves to a solid 7-4 and 4-3 in the B1G and Randy Edsell goes nuts.

Jeremy- Michigan 20, Maryland 17
Nick-Michigan 31, Maryland 20

Stanford 38, Cal 17
Line: Stanford -5.5, O/U: 56
Nothing helps you overcome offensive woes like playing Cal.  Stanford becomes bowl eligible puts up their second highest point total of the season.

Nick-Stanford 27, Cal 17
Jeremy- Stanford 31, Cal 27

Virginia 30, Miami 13
Line: MIA -6, O/U: 48.5
I liked Virginia here and Miami showed up just like I thought they would- flat and uninspired.  The Hurricanes fall to 6-5 and 3-4 in the ACC.  Virginia improves to 5-6 and next week’s game against Virginia Tech will determine which team makes a bowl.

Jeremy- Virginia 27, Miami 26
Nick-Miami 37, Virginia 27

Washington 37, Oregon State 13
Line: UW -6, O/U: 53.5
The Huskies snap a two game skid with a much needed win over OSU.
