Biggest Winner/s
Florida State
The
Seminoles faced some serious questions going into their matchup with the 25th
ranked Terps, specifically on defense.
Those questions were answered and then some. The Noles, who have struggled adjusting to Jeremy Pruitts
new scheme completely took Maryland’s offense apart, allowing only nine first
downs, 234 total yards and 0 points.
This was one of the best performances by FSU’s defense in recent memory. With a trip to Clemson looming on Oct.
19th, the Seminoles are playing their best football.
Notre Dame
The Irish
were in a serious tail-spin going into Saturday’s matchup with a dangerous Arizona State team but the
Irish pulled together and got a great team win. The defense played it best game of the season and the
offense ran the ball well, chewing up ASU’s suspect run d. The win moves Notre Dame to 4-2 on the
season and their next five games (USC, @ AFA, Navy, @ Pitt, BYU) are all
winnable before their season finale at Stanford.
Aaron Murray
There was a
lot of talk leading up to the season and continued after the week 1 loss to
Clemson about Murray, particularly his lack of success against top
competition. Murray’s performance
Saturday at Tennessee with a no-name offense should completely squash any of
that talk. Murray willed Georgia
to an overtime win in conditions that would have crushed most
quarterbacks. In the win, Murray
became the SEC’s all time leading passer (11,625 yards) and put himself near
the top of the Heisman conversation.
Biggest Losers
Georgia
The Dawgs
pulled out a gutty win on the road against an inspired Tennessee team but the
win came with a cost. The already
banged up Georgia offense lost two more key contributors in running back Keith
Marshall and receiver Justin Scott-Wesley with ACL injuries (both done for the
year). The second half of
Georgia’s schedule is comparatively easier than the beginning but they still
have a streaking Missouri team, Florida, at Auburn and at rival Georgia
Tech.
Washington
The Huskies
played a great game and in my opinion proved that they should be taken
seriously. Their performance also
shows how far Coach Steve Sarkisian has taken this program and what they’re
capable of. They gave Stanford
everything they had and seemed to simply run out of time. Why in the loser category? The Pac-12 North is among the most
competitive divisions in college football and the Huskies loss, with Oregon
coming up, puts them behind the eight-ball and unless they beat the Ducks, they’ll
be out of the running in the division.
Ole Miss
The Rebels
came in this season as a sleeper pick to make some noise in the SEC with a
great freshman class, but a shutout-loss to Alabama and a loss to Auburn in
consecutive weeks makes it difficult to keep buying this team. There is no
doubt Hugh Freeze has done a great job getting talent to Oxford, but it seems
like to this observer that the freshman class is running out of steam this
season. The road doesn’t get any easier either with Texas A&M and LSU visiting
in the next two weeks.
