Jeremy’s top 25 notes

1-Alabama
2- Stanford
3- Oregon
4- Clemson
5- LSU

Only one change in my top 5 from last week and that’s the bump to No. 5 for LSU.  The Tigers are as talented as ever on defense and quarterback Zach Mettenberger looks like he’s made great strides under OC Cam Cameron.  Alabama remains on top with a heart-stopping road win in College Station.  Stanford and Oregon continue to take care of business and are locked in at No. 2 and No. 3, respectively.  Clemson was off last week and get into conference play next week at 2-0 NC State.

6- Ohio State
7- Florida State
8- Texas A&M
9- Georgia
10- UCLA
6-10 has shuffled around from last week.  Ohio State and Florida State both move up one spot and Georgia stands pat at No. 9.  Texas A&M falls from No. 5 last week to No. 8 this week.  The Aggies suffered a tough home loss to Alabama but I think this team will work its way back up the polls.  UCLA jumps from No. 14 last week to No. 10 this week.  Few teams go to Nebraska and win and UCLA went to Nebraska and dominated the Huskers.  When the Bruins are rolling, they’re tough to beat.

11- South Carolina
12- Louisville
13- Oklahoma State
14- Oklahoma
15- Michigan

SC, Louisville and Oklahoma State stay the same from last week.  Oklahoma moves up from No. 16 last week to No. 14 this week.  After the play of Blake Bell at quarterback, Oklahoma looks like a team on the rise.  Michigan won but that performance against Akron was bad.  I had Michigan at No. 10 last week and maybe dropping them all the way to No. 15 is a little bit of an overreaction but they must be more consistent from week to week, especially when they get into Big 10 play.

16- Washington
17- Miami
18- Baylor
19- Florida
20- Northwestern

Big changes at 16-20.  After a big road win, Washington moves up five spots, from No. 21 last week to No. 16 this week.  Road wins have been rare under Sarkisian and their win at Illinois coupled with a tough win over Boise State in week 1 tell me a lot about how far this program has come.  Northwestern moves up two spots after a win last week.  Miami drops, not because of poor play (they had a bye), just because of movement around them.  The same is true with Florida.

21- Notre Dame
22- Boise State
23- Ole Miss
24- Arizona State
25- UCF

Aside from Boise, this is a totally new 21-25.  Boise moves up from No. 25 last week to No. 22, after drilling Air Force.  Notre Dame won, but again showed a tendency to struggle on the road against bad teams.  They won those games last year.  Will they this year?  We’ll see.  Ole Miss, ASU and UCF all check in to my top 25 for the first time.  Ole Miss is coming off a blowout at Texas, ASU survived at home against Wisconsin and UCF is quietly off to a solid start and just got a really good win at Penn State.

TCU (20), Wisconsin (23) and Nebraska (24) all drop out of the top 25 from last week.  TCU’s offense is a mess and for a team that had so much promise before the season, things are unraveling fast.  Wisconsin beat up on two FCS schools the first two weeks of the season and was in control in the desert, only to lose on a head-scratcher (quarterbacks, you actually have to touch your knee).  They’re a solid team and will be back in the top 25 soon.  Nebraska… ugh.  The worry for the Huskers going into the season was their defense and so far it’s cost them one game and almost cost them another.  If they can’t get this fixed, they can kiss the B1G good-bye.

Bubble teams:
Georgia Tech, Texas Tech, Fresno State, Wisconsin, Maryland, Michigan State

Top 25 Breakdown by Conference

Big 12- 3 (Oklahoma State, Oklahoma, Baylor)
B1G- 3 (Ohio State, Michigan, Northwestern)
AAC- 2 (Louisville, UCF)
MW- 1 (Boise State)
Ind- 1 (Notre Dame)

Nick’s Top 25 Notes
On the radar: Arizona State 2-0, Georgia Tech 2-0, Michigan State 3-0, Wisconsin, 2-1, Maryland 3-0

1-5
My top five did not change at all this week. Bama proved it is the best team in the country in a wild game in College Station. Stanford slept walked for the first part against Army, but still came away with the win. Clemson was off, Oregon rolled a young, but improving Tennessee team. Ohio State put up 50 points on Cal without Braxton Miller.

6-10
LSU, Florida State, Georgia and South Carolina all stay put 6-9 this week with Michigan making its first appearance in the top 10 this week, but the Wolverines were two yards away from dropping out of the top 25 all together with a near miss at home to Akron. LSU and Florida State rolled this weekend and South Carolina handled Vanderbilt pretty well.

11-15
I still have Louisville one place out of the top 10, I think the Cards are good just not a top 10 team yet. Oklahoma moves up after a dominant performance against Tulsa. Notre Dame also had a near miss with Purdue giving it a tough game, but is going to need to improve to stay in the top 15 with Michigan State coming to South Bend. Texas A&M lost a tough one at home to Alabama, but had a chance to win in the end. The Aggies drop just three places for a loss to Bama. Oklahoma State moves into the top 15 this week and could be a team to watch out for in the Big 12.

16-20
Washington moves up two places to 16 after a victory over Illinois in Chicago. UCLA is now up to 17 after a big road win at Nebraska. UCLA could make some serious moves in the Pac-12 this year and could be the front-runner in the South Division. Miami and Florida stay at 18-19, respectively.  Northwestern rounds it out at No. 20. I think the Wildcats have a chance to make some noise in the B1G this year. They need to prepare for a big date against Ohio State coming up quickly.

21-25
Baylor moves up one place this week at No. 21, this offense is fast and can score with anyone. Ole Miss moves up three places to No. 22 after it ran over Texas in Austin on Saturday. The Rebels could be a surprise team this year. Fresno State stays at 23 this week because its game was postponed due to the flooding on the Front Range in Colorado. Texas Tech moves in to the top 25 at 24 after a big home win against a TCU team struggling to find an offense. Boise State is one of the better teams in the country with its only loss coming opening night to Washington.
